Risk factors include male gender, a reflux history of more than 5 years, an age older than 50 years, repeated relapses of reflux esophagitis during the year. When pancreatic enzymes and bile enter the esophagus, the disease is more severe, and metaplasia progresses faster. At the initial stages of Barrett's syndrome, the migration of a cylindrical gastric epithelium into the esophagus is a protective reaction, since such a mucosa is less susceptible to the aggressive influence of an acidic environment. |
