| Description | One of the causes of the spinal epidural abscess. Genus Veillonella - gram-negative anaerobic cocci, living in the oral cavity of healthy people and animals. Little studied. Two types of cocci, not yet included in determinants, have been described comparatively recently. Veylonella refers to the so-called cariogenic microorganisms, which selectively accumulate on the surfaces of teeth most often affected by caries (fissure and interdental surfaces), forming dental plaques. According to Bowden, bicycles constitute 6% of the entire microflora of dental plaques. Cariesogenicity of veynolles is determined by the production of large amounts of lactic acid in the presence of carbohydrates, which leads to an increase in the permeability of enamel, acid dissolution of the enamel in the least resistant areas, followed by penetration of acids into the subsurface layer of the enamel and its demineralization. Further formation of organic acids on the surface of the enamel enhances demineralization processes, which leads to the formation of microcavities in the enamel, filled with microorganisms and the products of their metabolism. The microflora of the dental plaque, including the bicycle, plays an important role in the development of periodontitis, an inflammatory process in periodontal tissues.
